Reading and writing are pivotal to everyday life and we aim for children at Cutteslowe to develop a love of reading and writing. We understand the importance of reading and writing across the curriculum and how integral it is to their learning and future development.
We use the ‘No Nonsense’ spelling scheme and ‘letterjoin’ for handwriting to ensure a consistent approach to learning across the writing curriculum. This helps us to ensure good coverage of different areas for learning and aids the children by ensuring limited cognitive overload.
- At Cutteslowe Primary School, in our English lessons we offer our children:
- A broad range of texts and text types to encourage curiosity and create engaging lessons
- An understanding of phonics and the ability to recognise different phoneme-grapheme correspondences
- The ability to express their understanding through a range of different outcomes
- The ability to think independently as well as learn from others in peer and group work
- The value in planning and drafting their work to ensure the best possible outcome for them as individuals
- The opportunity to revisit their learning by editing, proof-reading and making additions to their work opportunities in the community to see value of reading and writing
- A wide range of both subject and topic specific vocabulary
- Enrichment opportunities that link to the love of reading and writing
English is taught daily, usually during the morning. Children are encouraged to develop their reading and writing skills through continuous provision and taught phonics sessions in the early years. With this being built upon with more formal writing lessons linked to a key text in KS1 and KS2.
Please read the documents below for more details about how English is taught and assessed in our school.
