P.S.H.E. (Personal, Social & Health Education)

PSHE Co-ordinator: Ellie Goodman (KS1 teacher)

Aim: At Cutteslowe Primary School, we aim to provide a PSHE programme of learning through which children and young people can develop their knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, it helps to develop the qualities pupils need to thrive as individuals and as part of our community. It also identifies links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of the school.

Teaching and learning (scheme of work):

We follow the Jigsaw scheme of work. Learning is organised into Six Puzzles (Themes/ Units of work) across the year. The scheme is mapped to the Department for Education’s statutory requirements and PSHE Association programmes of study and is taught as a spiral curriculum.

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

Teaching approaches: It is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time at their own level. All lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs.

PSHE at Cutteslowe is taught in weekly focused sessions using a range of approaches, including video clips, discussions,  interactive activities, small group tasks, and learning through story books.

Relationships Education and Physical Health & Mental Wellbeing:

From September 2020, primary schools in England also need to teach Relationships and Health Education as compulsory subjects and the Department for Education Strongly recommends this should also include age-appropriate Sex Education. Schools also have statutory responsibilities to safeguard their pupils (Keeping ChildrenSafe in Education, DfE, 2019) and to uphold the Equality Act (2010). Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, compulsory Relationships And Health Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development.
