Modern Foreign Language at Cutteslowe
Learning a foreign language is part of the primary National Curriculum and is a requirement for all children within Key Stage 2 (KS2). Cutteslowe Primary School has adopted a whole school approach to the teaching of French to all KS2 pupils.
At Cutteslowe, the study of a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) is seen as an important part of our pupils’ education. We endeavour to develop a love of languages through the teaching of a Modern Foreign Language (MFL) in a fun and enjoyable way. Learning another language raises awareness of our multilingual and multicultural society, and introduces an international dimension to pupils’ learning whilst also developing communication skills. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.
We have chosen to teach French as our MFL. This is to ensure pupils have a solid foundation in the subject before moving into the next phase of their education. Topics and themes are returned to and built upon across KS2 in order to stretch and challenge pupils, and to allow them to build on previous knowledge and skills.
We will help them develop and demonstrate substantial progress in the 5 key language skills necessary for learning French: speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. We aim to ensure that pupils of all abilities develop solid foundations in these key language learning skills - properly preparing them for the next stage of their language learning journey. These skills will develop children’s ability to understand what they hear and read, and enable them to express themselves in speech and writing. We will extend their knowledge of how language works and explore the similarities and differences between French and English. We will also help strengthen their sense of identity through learning about culture in other countries and comparing it with their own.
