Design & Technology
At Cutteslowe Primary School, Design and Technology is an important part of the primary curriculum, providing children with the opportunity to explore, create and evaluate products in both practical and creative ways. Through Design and Technology, children develop essential life skills, including problem-solving, creativity and collaboration. We follow the D&T Association approach to teaching; each of our topics starts with a product, user and purpose. This ensures that our children think like designers, ensuring their projects are both practical and thoughtful. Our projects include three types of activities:
-
Investigative and Evaluative Activities (IEAs) where children learn from a range of existing products and find out about D&T in the wider world;
-
Focused Tasks (FTs) where they are taught specific technical knowledge, designing skills and making skills;
-
Design, Make and Evaluate Assignment (DMEA) where children create functional products with users and purposes in mind.
Our curriculum ensures that skills are developed in:
-
Mechanisms
-
Structures
-
Textiles
-
Cooking and nutrition
-
Electrical systems (KS2)
-
Digital world (KS2)
